Subject: ...and about the election...
We had an awesome hour-long discussion in WLH today about the above topic. Of course, the class is mostly composed of intelligent, liberal individuals, who basically all have the same views on everything. A few of my favorite quotes (not word for word) from the conversation:

"I don't understand why America can't understand that the real importance is in the issues such as the economy, health care, and the war on terror. If people are voting based on "moral values", the majority of people aren't voting for what's best for the country. They aren't thinking about how their vote affects the rest of the world."

"Why is some man in a suit allowed to make decisions regarding a women's right to choose? He'll NEVER have to deal with that issue himself, and just because he personally feels a certain way about it doesn't give him the right to make the decision for all of us."

"I hope he REALLY fucks up, just so the rest of the world can be like, why did I vote for that idiot? Yeah, I just want him to fuck something up really badly, just so people have that realization."

Well..., 11-04-04 12:21am

About that second quote... regardless of who was elected, it will still be some man in a suit making decisions regarding a woman's right to choose. And theoretically, presidents don't even have that power. They aren't allowed to decide anything as far as the law goes until congress sends him a bill.

About that third quote... that's one of the worst things I've ever heard. If you hope he messes up, it's just because you're selfish and want to be right about not voting for him. If he doesn't mess up, then you have to insert your foot into your mouth. (Either way, you're a crummy person for saying such a thing)

Re: Well..., 11-04-04 12:33am

To clarify, these aren't quotes from MY mouth. They were just comments brought upon by a political discussion in my english class.

But personally, I defend the speakers of both of the quotes, and agree with them.

Oh, I'm aware they aren't from your mouth.

Feel free to defend the third quote. But the second quote is constitutionally inaccurate. It's a misguided statement.

Re: Re: Re: Well..., 11-04-04 12:45am

Either way, the president can decide to try to outlaw abortion nation-wide. And regardless of whether or not he can do that alone, the fact that he'll try in the first place is enough to cause girls to disagree with him.

You have to admit--he'll never have reason to get an abortion himself. There are numerous ways in which a girl can get pregnant unintentionally. It's a valid argument that we (being the speaker and I) don't agree with Bush on this issue.

C'est tout.

(Where's Meredith when you need her? Haha...)

Re: Re: Re: Re: Well..., 11-04-04 11:44pm

Specifically, Bush declared his stance on abortion as this -

He is against abortion except for instances of rape and incest.

Also, if Bush believes it's morally wrong to abort a child, doesn't he have every right and duty to make sure the citizens of America do the right thing? And about the people decided... if a bill is passed by Congress, which is the only way a law can be made, then it WILL be the people deciding.

I can't figure out why it's so hard for people to figure out that if people just act responsibly and abstain, then the need for an abortion would effectively dissapear, regardless of whether or not it's legal.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Well..., 11-05-04 12:08am

In an ideal world, people WOULD abstain until they were ready to deal with the possibility of pregnancy. In the real world, good people sometimes do stupid things and therefore find themselves pregnant before they are ready.

And the whole congress=the people thing is pretty close to BS. Republicans basically have control of Congress and apparently Bush can skew the system even more by electing the supreme court justice.

Of course, if I believed in pro-life and was the president, i'd want to fight for my personal beliefs too. It says something, though, that Kerry is both Catholic and pro-choice, but decided that it was not his place to declare that sort of thing for the entire nation.

And I don't like Bush's stance in the first place. Against abortion, EXCEPT. That whole 'except' part doesn't cut it for me. Anyone can therefore say that an unplanned pregnancy was a result of 'rape'.

ANYWAY....I'd like to steer away from the political discussion, if that's okay with everyone. (But I still think that Meredith should have a chance to state her opinions.)

I don't see what's not true about it.

If you believe that abortion is wrong, just as if you believe that gay marriages are wrong, that's perfectly fine. But do you really think that you are important enough to deny that right to the people who believe it isn't wrong? To you, abortion may be morally wrong, but it isn't to everyone, so lay off them and don't make decisions for them.

Another thing... if Bush is so concered with protecting life (by making abortions illegal), why is he going to let so many people buy guns?

Um guys, I don't think the speaker was saying that the quote is untrue, just that the president CAN'T OUTLAW ABORTION until a BILL is passed.
Gotta go through the checks and balances. It's all about civics baby.

Shut up, Louise, you're practically quoting HIS FATHER!! :-P And, as I said, I could care less about the civics of it. I care that he has stupid Christian idealist values in the first place and would like to take away women's choice. THE QUOTE WAS ABOUT THE FUNDAMENTALS OF IT ALL, NOT THE CIVICS.

(And POWER TO THE PERSON WHO SAID IT!!)

AMEN SISTER! haha.

technically, it will always be some guy in a suit (unless it's a woman! i'm rooting for you, hillary!) making descions about a woman's right to choose. whether the descion is in favor or against it, it is a descision nonetheless. but that aside, i completely agree with nicole. if he's the president, he should look out for the interests of the country and not let personal bias sway his descion. and anyway, i'm sure we're not taking away any lives in iraq...

Holy crap Melissa, I never said that I thought a man in a suit (or sweatpants, or whatever he may be wearing) should make a woman's decision to choose. I SAID that it was NOT GOING TO HAPPEN unless 2/3 of CONGRESS agreed with him. Geez. I totally am pro-choice (even though killing babies is really inhumane in my mind, if someone had to, I think the facilities should be open to them)
I like how you're dissing Christian ideals and you're the most Christian person I know :-P.
And by the way, shouldn't the man have some say in it? I mean a woman should make the FINAL decision, but it affects the man just as much as the woman right? it's not like that fetus was spontaneously contracepted (which would be verrrrrry strange)

ok everyone said what me miss "anti-fucking bush" was gonna say except..womens choice is about not JUST abortion its about adoption, foster care, prenatal care, health care, and most importantly Sexual education so everyone in this country knows about protected sex,and how to prevent having a unplanned possibly dangerous pregnancy! Women just want control over thier own bodies..thats womens choice..abortion is part of that...and most women arnt lining up for them like crazy either...cmon people...who REALLY wants to have a abortion anyway? Morally, Emotionally, and Physicaly, abortions arnt the hottest club in town..but sometimes pple NEED them, yes need, like LIFE OR DEATH need, and if you dont, then you dont, good for you, but that does not mean that you get to tell someone who might die if they deliver the child they are carrying due to medical conditions. OK,. i have ranted, and i promise i wont fuck bush literally but FUCK BUSH!

I know what you meant. And i wasn't yelling at you, I was clarifying that the civics of the matter was not the point. And I may be Christian, but I'm a very liberal Protestant. And yes, I do think that the man should have some say in the matter of abortion.

Just to clarify, you definitely do not have to be "pro-abortion" to be "pro-choice".
And a man's opinion does matter. But, in case you haven't noticed women have had to FIGHT and continue to fight simply to be heard.

To Jeff Hayman: I think you are immature and disrespectful. Regarding how democrats are dealing with this loss: for all your neo-conservative, close-minded, apathetic comments, you complain about OUR whining? Get a clue. Even though Mr. Bush technically won, half of the country is still against him. Some uniter- you can have him.

Molly: I knew there was a reason I liked you. <3

Everyone: We can argue and discuss all we want, but the fact of the matter is that it is very, VERY unlikely that we will ever change the President's opinions. This is what we have for the next four years. The country has survived all kinds of ups and downs, and we will survive this, too. And just because something happens now doesn't mean that somewhere down the road, maybe in 20 years, it can't change. Ya never know.

Cheney definetly borders on the evil side. But the again, so does Bush. Right wing nut job.
Has everyone been to jibjab.com? If not, watch "It's Good to be in DC" because it's hellllla funny. So is "This Land, but I'm sure we've all seen that one.
Four years is a LOOOOONG time. But guess what? Next election WE CAN ALL VOTE! And we can have parties betting who will win!

Also, for the majority of America (not in our bay area bubble), guns are not a weapon. They are a tool. Guns aren't only used for shooting people. They are also used for protection and hunting. For rural citizens, killing someone with a gun crosses the mind about as often as killing someone with a hammer.

And I do not believe I was rude until this post. And even then, I just stated a fact, rather than insulting more than half of the country.
