Subject: band camp cont.
alright. so. band camp.

it was really really hectic getting on the bus and rushing everything after freshman orientation. cool hectic, but not a cup of tea. once we finally got moving (after waiting for gabe to get on the bus for like 5 minutes...)

quick break for my schedule:

0) marching band-mr. ferrucci
1) survey comp/lit-smith
2) PE-Lodge
3) Geometry H-Olson
4) Girls' Ensemble-Shaull
5) Biology-Williams
6) French II-Youatt
7) World Studies-Freeman
*Advisory 9

so back to band camp. highlights of the bus ride were jeff reading christiana's romance novel and changing all of the feminine body parts/sexual things to money. i.e. "he took the money out of the wallet and caressed it with his masterful hands" although it got old after about 5 minutes, it was pretty damn funny. especially with it being jeff hayman and all. ummm...we also filled out these hilarious surveys made by jeff. questions were: would you rather be a(n) undertaker or porn star? what is the meaninf of life? is the meaning of life? is the answer to this question no? it was great. then the results were passed around amongst the clarinets. apparently they'll be used when we do secret pals or something.

once we got there, we unpacked and had a few minutes before we worked on drill. had a safety lecture, all that good stuff. then drill for like 3 hours. actually, it wasn't THAT long, but i had a long day and it was cold and windy and we learned how to do half-steps (16 by 5 yards) forwards and backwards. it took a lot of concentration to get it right.

then a clarinet sectional and an hour with the band. it was actually a fairly quick music rehersal. didn't get a whole lot done in our sectional. ummm...i think we got new chords for Amber then, too.

dinner. mmmm...dinner.

then we had time to do stuff before game night. then game night. learned some pretty freaky stuff about leadership staff and staff. was introduced to the game 'big booty'....which turned out to be an obsession of the band for the rest of the trip. played pictionary with jeff and kendall. dizzy fun tag with brian. haha. dizzy fun tag. haha. also watched mr ferrucci play dizzy fun tag. o and telephone. we had some pretty interesting messages circulating... leave it to laura and jon to make telephone interesting. lmao.

then we uhh...'went to bed'. while our room was actually sleeping, the drumline's room was making tons of noise and getting in mucho trouble from mr. ferrucci. while getting in this 'trouble', they gossipped about gabe's brother and some other interesting things...the story was set straight the following evening.

breakfast...mmm...breakfast. well, after a shower and all that.

then drill. for like EVER. it must have been at least 3 hours. drill with and without instruments. forwards and backwards. side to side...playing scales...warmups...in the cold, weirdly salty mist crap. it was great.

lunch...mmmm...lunch

uhhh wow. it's getting really hard to relive all of the details. it's also hard because jeff and terrance are IMing me. but anyway, after lunch we had time to do stuff.

went up to the bunkers with clarinets and modified trumpets. actually, it ended up with a few more trumpets than we had originally planned. well, we crawled around...groped in the dark. guessed who each other was by their hands while slapping each other's asses....yeah...good times. haha. explored some more...hung out. pretty cool.

ummm...probably some more marching. oh yeah. haha. there was. we learned the first part of Amber. like 3 measures. ha. and guess what i do? stand. and trill. and not move. at all.

ummm...more stuff.

dinner...mmmm...dinner

ummm stuff until SKIT NIGHT!! HELL YEAH!! skit night rocked. the clarinets did a skit that made ppl strip...(props to matt who took his shirt off first) and i licked icing and oreo's and shit off of glass with derek doing the same on the other side...(consequently, it looked like we were licking each other) and yeah. we won. it was a competition. lots of funny skits. freshman guys saying corny pickup lines to seniors and falling on their asses, the gatorade skit with color guard style and stuff, matt doing a back flip (impressive!!) me on my first date pretending to be in a rodeo....haha....the color guard being silent for a whole minute (eek!) smooth and creamy by jeff and terrance (probably a crowd favorite), dirty dancing by the low brASS, a harry potter-look alike featuring richard for the leadership staff skit, and a few others. all in all, it was a wonderful evening. o, and mr. ferrucci's dog, taffy.

oh, and just as a side note, i haven't called him Ted yet!! it's easer than i thought...

ummm okay well in the morning there was

breakfast...mmmm...breakfast

and umm yeah. i'll skip to the sentimental part if i'm feeling up to it.

it's amazing how quickly you meet new people and how willing they are to accept you here. it's pretty neat to just come into a new thing with no expectations and a limited talent (well, at least for me, with clarinet not being my best instrument) and to come out of it after 8 days with TONS of new friends, an incredible amount of knowledge about the activity you are engaging in. although the amount of information i learned about marching band probably overrides the social growth of my experience so far, it is the friendships made that mean the most to me.

it was such a shock to go into freshman orientation and realize that: yes, the people who were popular last year are still popular, bitchy, and unfriendly. i had just not been around that kind of exclusion since marching band.

there aren't many places where everyone accepts each other so quickly and openly. theatre has its groups, soccer has its groups, even horseback riding has its groups. now, i'm not saying that the marching band is completely happy-go-lucky and there is no hierarchy whatsoever, but at least to me it feels like i am accepted by everyone i see.

it's too bad i got onto that whole group thing. i was doing my whole sophisticated writing style shit before...

hmm...well anyway, i think that that's just about it. a few more things.

it is really rare to admire someone for a distance (for their appearance, nothing else) and realize that they are actually a really amiable, interesting person. it's also rare that you hang out with them a ton after you realize that they're friendly.

o, and the quote of band camp 2003: "i have things to see, people to do." -terrance
