okay. well. seeing as i have church in like...55 minutes (haha...nevermind then) i guess i'll be a little short with you. but not too short. (after all, i am a very tall person, and i DO have a bit of time.) before i begin i would just like to say that i love my journal. it reflects me so well!! i just read about 45 entries back and i'm just really glad that i can look back on it all and realize that i'm still the same person i was. entering high school or not, i'm still melissa. yeah okay, that was cheezy and corny and utter crap. but the point is, MY JOURNAL ROCKS!! read back a little more! you'll have fun!! i did... so...phantom of the opera. saw it friday night in the city. (technically, san jose is a larger city, so it should be 'the city', but we all know i meant san francisco, don't we?) it was unlike any performance of phantom i have ever seen. (and i've seen it 5 times now.) what really struck me was the casting. as soon as both roul and phantom had sung their first few solos, i got the feeling that they were cast because they were singers. true, classically trained, talented beyond the reach of most clasically trained, singers. (if anyone has a suggestion as to make that sentence correct, i'm intrigued.) first off, phantom, or brad little, was a low baritone. how could i tell? i can tell these things. he had a similar voice quality to david cryer, m. firmin. if you are unfimiliar with the roll, it is a baritone/low baritone/bass supporting roll. but none of this means anything to you. (actually, it probably means a lot to a good deal of the people reading this, but now i'm contradicting myself and making this confusing.) the phantom must be played by an extremely talented man who has an incredible range. he must be able to support the low baritone/bass range notes, as well as have a confident, often floaty and easily sung tenor and falsetto range. usually, the phantom would be classified as a high baritone. the tenor notes are easily sung, and the falsetto is beautifully crafted, especially shown off in the last note of my personal favorite, 'music of the night'. brad little, being a low baritone, (and i have to give him this, an extremely talented and clasically trained low baritone) was NOT floaty in his tenor range, and had a VERY weak falsetto. well, as weak as it can possibly be when you support it to the best of your ability. (which, in brad's case, was very well.) but, needless to say, you could tell that those notes would be WAAAAAY out of his range if he had not been trained the way he obviously was. to be blunt, his tenor range and falsetto would be crap, utter crap, had he not a good voice teacher. it would be entirely out of his range, and he would be a happy-go-lucky low baritone. (oh, and to classify all of this low/high baritone shizzle, there is no such thing. it's just baritone. but, baritone, being the middle range for the male, changed voice, isn't saying much. it means a lot more to me, at least, when i specify the strength of the baritone. those strength being towards their higher range or their lower range. got me?) so i think that's enough about brad little. i've been confusing, gramatically wrong all over the place, and unclear. that's what i get for being busy and getting no sleep. nevermind. more about brad little. he also spoke a lot of his lines. like A LOT more than most phantoms. it created a different, more eerie sensation. you all know the famous line 'be my guest, sir' when roul is entering phantom's dungeon to rescue christine at the end, right? well it is sung. always. michael crawford, THE phantom sung it. and you dont mess with michael crawford. or do you... well mr. little did. (rotfol) he sung 'be my guest' and spoke 'sir'. in a very creepy, phantom-ish way. it was a very interesting effect. i've never heard the line delivered that way EVER. so ummm yeah. to some up mr. little: (lmfao HAHAHAHA!!!) he was cast on his singing ability. his low baritone range made it nearly impossible for him to sing the tenor/falsetto notes in 'music of the night'. he spoke a lot of his lines. the same, although different, is tim martin gleason, roul. he, too, was cast on his singing (although in a higher-medium baritone range). but i'm not going to nitpick on him as much. after all, he was cute, and how can roul be unloveable?? as for christine, she's a natural. she's a pro. she played christine in the 4.5 years phantom was running continuously in san francisco. she's gotten AWARDS for her protrayal of christine. i have nothing more to say. no objections. this lady IS christine. o, and 'this lady' is lisa vroman. remarkable woman. the same really goes for the rest of the cast. (i'm getting tired of reviewing...i spent WAY too much energy on mr. little (rotfmfao). kim stengel, carlotta, has done over 2.500 performances in the roll of carlotta. (although in canada.) madame giry, patti davidson-gorbea, was wonderful as always. i just love that roll. it would be mine if i ever get a chance to do phantom. meg giry, kate wray, graduated from the london school of ballet. must i say more? yeah. that's damn impressive. i am sooo reviewed out. it would be a tiring career. i like it though. double major in performing arts and writing...maybe some publicity/business bachelor degree. but all my cool friends would turn on me if i went into the business... *ok, the time is now 1:31 and i realize that i have a few more things to add. 1) mr. little (lmao HAHAHA!!) was VERY VERY VERY TALL!! like 6'4''-6'5''. like REALLY tall. 2) i never understood that 'past the point of no return' was about sex. no idea. and i had such sophisticated thoughts on the meaning of it too. haha. what a loser. it's really sexy now that i know what it's about.... 3) i am completely losing it. ROLE! ROLE!! NOT ROLL!! |

iwish2bemilkywhite | 08-24-03 4:00pm whereas it sucks that little couldn't do to much with his high range, i must say that i totally respect him for doing new things with the role(which, btw, is not spelled roll :-P). i think the best part of some shows is that the same show with a different lead can become a completely different show. wow i said show like 3 times in that last sentence. lol. but anyway, it's cool that you got to see the change in that. it's a great experience to see that kind of thing happen. much love! |
musicalbabe | Re:, 08-24-03 4:30pm wow...i'm retarded. i honestly haven't gotten that much sleep these past few days. o, and to nitpick on your grammar, 'to' in 'to much' should be spelled 'too'. OMG I GOT THE SEXIEST SHIRT TODAY!! it makes my boobs like MARVELOUS!! the boys will die. it's beautiful. lots of amour. enjoy this last day of summer!! or do you start with the palo alto ppl on tuesday?? |
