Subject: How many times is life ironic? Let me count the ways.........
1. The girl I fell for is engaged.
2. The largest influence in my political science class is from the left. This being in a largley conservative community, with me, a conservative in the class.
3. I come from a town that celebrates red underwear, yet I've never owned a pair in my life.
4. Despite all appearances, maturity is an overall mindset and not a brief glimpse.
5. Life can be summed up in a few words. But a few words will never make it through life.
6. Love and hate are on an equilibrium. If you love something too much in the beginning, you will hate it even more when it ends.
7. Why does it take a conscious effort by a group of women to be successful (feminism) when men have just stumbled upon it?
8. When human worth is measured in terms of dollars, it is said to be evil. When populations are viewed in terms of new markets, it is called economics.
9. How come politicians and lawyers are labeled evil for playing the game of politics when stock brokers earn more money from playing the game of monopoly on a grand scale?
10. And isn't it ironic that there is a black fly in my chardonay?

Funny, you know what I mean. Even though I didn't make it very clear. Hmmm, somehow I didn't think that that would get responded to.

Feminism, 12-21-02 11:18pm

I had an interesting insight about this in my World History class - based an entire project on the concept, in fact. The reason men "stumbled" into success was because the first positions of power were based on brute force - regional political dominance rested on military prowess, which is essentially an adaptation of the ability to act as a predator. After men had established their position, they often set down in writing various measures to solidify it (the Lawbook of Manu and the Confucian Analects, among others,) leaving women only economic means of advancement - and even that was often taken away by social stigma. It's all a bit more complex than all that, of course, but, in short, it did take a conscious effort on the part of men to succeed - they just happened to have the necessary advantage at that point in the development of human society. Now, I think, things are evening out and coming to a more natural equilibrium, the feminist movement's extra, often ridiculous pushings notwithstanding.

"the feminist movement's extra, often ridiculous pushings notwithstanding"

No offense, but my thoughts exactly. I can only be so pleased to find someone else who can speak as eloquently as you. It's very odd, compared to some other people here.

I phrased it that way intentionally - I find the "feminist" movement laughable. I am a great believer in equal opportunity, but I also recognize that no amount of posturing and recitation of mantras can rewire the natural patterns of human relationships. The ideas put forth by many feminists are just as foreign and unnatural as those ideas set down so many centuries ago by men in positions of power.
Thank you for the compliment, although I am a bit confused by your use of the phrase, "I can only be so pleased."
