isn't a martyr someone who dies for their cause? so wouldnt "a wounded martyr" be a really ridiculous and redundant phrase?

Perhaps. Or maybe a martyr is someone who's WILLING and WOULD die for their cause if the situation arose. But hasn't necessarily died yet.

The dictionary says pretty much that they just have to endure CONSTANT SUFFERING and/or sacrifice for their cause. Whereas death would be the ultimate sacrifice.
