Well my friends I would love to introduce you to...MOROCCO! Here is me and Youssef - my almost husband. Even though I didn't want to get married I won't lie - this guy rocked my Moroccan world ;) haha! For those of you who read the story of my Moroccan affair in Danielle's journal these are the pictures of Youssef's family - my almost in-laws. In this picture I am sitting next to his mom. Here is another picture of more of his family. His mom had nine kids and he is the youngest. Another picture of the two of us. This was taken in the "souq" or market in Marrakesh. We were at another of his friends shops. We spent a lot of time sitting while they "worked." He and I were writing messages to each other in Arabic (thank god for phrase books!) A stolen kiss in....*gasps* PUBLIC?!?!? He was quite traditional (in the Muslim sense...not western!) so this sort of caught me off guard. In Marrakesh there is a big square that things are always happening. On our first day through we encountered the monkeys.. Ashley was so excited to be touching a monkey and it just made me laugh. This is the big square at night. There were thousands of people around, eating, talking and watching the different "acts" that were going on. It really reminded me of something out of medieval times but it was really awesome. There were even more people this night because it was New Year's Eve. In Marrakesh, and a lot of Moroccan cities there are a lot of gardens. This was one of the gardens outside of the biggest mosque in Marrakesh and the third largest mosque in Morocco. From the roof of our riad (it is like a hotel but is generally in someone's home and is more like our idea of a bed and breakfast) we could see the king's Marrakesh palace. The king also was in Marrakesh while we were there so there was a lot of activiity going on. Me with the palace in the background. We went to an art museum in Marrakesh and I just thought this lamp was beautiful. The Imperial City of Fez This is one of the gates to the medina, or the market area. Years ago the gates would close at night so that whoever went in could be monitored. The gates in are blue and when you walk out they are green. Blue is the color of the city of Fez and green in the color of Islam. The tannery in the Fez market. This was so disgusting. They carry all the skins in on the backs of donkeys (BALACK - is the arabic word for MOVE NOW - the donkey drivers yell this constantly so that no one gets run over in the narrow streets) and all of the treatment is done by hand, the men don't wear any protection and their hands and legs are stained the colors of the dye. The ancient Roman city of Volubilis. The Romans built this city because in this area of Morocco the climate and geography are right for growing grapes and olives. They produced and exported lots of these products during their reign here. The Hassan 2 mosque in Casablanca. We didn't spend much time in Casablanca and honestly the city was a disapointment but this mosque was amazing. It is absolutely huge and sits on the Atlantic Ocean. It is the largest mosque in Morocco and the third largest mosque in the world. Me, inside the mosque in one of the washing rooms. Just a picture of the landscape. While we were in the Sahara we came to a well where animals sometimes come looking for water. This little donkey was walking around, he was only 3 days old and I was the only one he let pet him!! Me wearing a veil...sort of...Youssef thought I looked beautiful with only my eyes showing...I laughed. That's all for now - I'll scan some more later! |
