"Have you ever cried you were so happy?" Joel looked at her, puzzled. "No not really. Have you?" She threw back the shot and squinched her eyes shut, waiting for the burn to subside. "No, but I've seen other people do it." Joel was quiet, he sipped his beer slowly, watching her out of the corner of his eye. She must have been drunk, he thought. Saleen was circling the rim of the shot glass with her middle finger, admiring her home-done manicure. "You know why it's such a big deal that you cry when you're happy?" "No." He was now half turned on his stool, almost facing her but not quite, intrigued but not interested. "It's because you're so happy, it makes you sad you're not that happy all the time. It's because when you cry, you only cry because you're sad. It makes sense that eventually you reach this certain degree of happiness where it's like the line between being happy and being sad is really blurry. Happy and sad aren't opposites, you get it? They're the gradient, they're like the mesh in the middle of the opposites." Joel tilted his head to the side in an unconcious imitation of Anelle. "Then what's the extreme of the spectrum?" "Apathy. It'll kill you." |
