i've wanted to respond to laurence's question about the danish comics for a while, but have had trouble manipulating woohu to my will, so here it is:
i refuse to hold an entire country responsible for a comic strip by one guy that was published in one newspaper, a private business. the government of an entire nation is not responsible for the publication of one private business. people are free to speek, that's why it's called "freedom if speech". am i happy that someone made fun of my religion? no, hell no.
but retaliation through a comic making fun of jews? what the hell? that's beyond childish. it's embarassing.
i will not boycott danish products, i will not hate on the danes and i will not encourage someone else to make a comic making fun of another religion. we should realize how horrible it felt for us to have to suffer some ignorant soul's mockery of our faith. doing the same to someone else is just wrong.
the end. *bows* |

cowboy67 | 02-20-06 11:45pm thanks for responding. all of the muslims i've talked to about this seem to say the same thing... but then again, all of the muslims i know are educated, liberal, and secular.
regardless, it was nice to hear the non-sensationalized version. the media just fuel the so-called "east vs. west" misunderstanding/hatred/whatever they want to call it. they love to polarize everyone. and it actually works...people who don't know any better see pictures of some muslims reacting aggressively and then they form ann coulter-like opinions of islam as a religion and muslims as a people, as if there is no variation among them; on the other side, a few europeans do something stupid and now some muslims are attacking US embassies and, like you said, mocking Jews. then it's broadcast everywhere and the extremists around the world point to these events as proof of their convictions that the "other" is evil. people are just waiting for any excuse to hate and kill each other.
i agreed with what you and noor had to say. something i wondered about was this: is it right/justifiable for muslims to hold non-muslims accountable for not abiding by a muslim rule (i.e. drawing the prophet)? i mean, wouldn't that be like me, being raised christian, getting mad at non-christians for not believing that jesus is the son of God? obviously i understand that the cartoons were disrespectful of the Islamic faith, but if non-muslims don't know the rules of Islam, how can they be at fault? i only ask in the most theoretical sense (because i know the response might be "if you're in the press, you need to be aware of certain rules and do your homework before printing something potentially offensive," but i'm just trying to understand the rationale behind the anger).

Anonymous | Re:, 02-21-06 4:07pm Its a media war. Take media out of the whole scenario and it is almost peaceful. 15 top TV Channels are run by Jews. No pointing fingers.
We are in the middle of an informational warfare.
Bless.
