Subject: the makings of a sci-fi movie |
|
but every sci-fi movie has some scary element of truth: "Curing" homosexuality in the womb. By William Saletan Some conservative Christian leaders are endorsing prenatal treatment to prevent homosexuality. Rev. Albert Mohler Jr., president of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, writes, "If a biological basis is found, and if a prenatal test is then developed, and if a successful treatment to reverse the sexual orientation to heterosexual is ever developed, we would support its use as we should unapologetically support the use of any appropriate means to avoid sexual temptation and the inevitable effects of sin." In an AP interview, Mohler says this would be morally no different from curing fetal blindness or any other "medical problem." A leading Catholic thinker agrees: "Same-sex activity is considered disordered. If there are ways of detecting diseases or disorders of children in the womb, and a way of treating them that respected the dignity of the child and mother, it would be a wonderful advancement of science." Conservative reaction to Mohler: How dare you suggest homosexuality is biological. Gay reaction: How dare you say it's still wrong even if it's biological. Mohler's clarifications: 1) I oppose genetic, as opposed to hormonal, intervention in the fetus. 2) I'm trying to head off something worse and more plausible: abortions of gay fetuses. |

cowboy67 | 03-20-07 5:34pm i'm so over the either/or thinking of the "modern" western world. either them gays learn it, or they was born with it! dunnit matter how, they're still sinners against the Lord! |
nerdalert | Re:, 03-21-07 3:43pm i've just concluded that i dont care what other people think....as in conservative christians...im christian, and i know many other christians who are gay and who arent who dont see a problem with homosexuality. everyone has their views, and it sucks that they disagree, but its their right to disagree, and even if they try to force their views on me or others....im not gonna come back and try to force mine on them...ya know |
cowboy67 | Re: Re:, 03-21-07 7:45pm yeah, it's fine not to care what other people think, but the problem lies in that those other people have control over your body, health, access to resources, employment, lifestyle choices (e.g. marriage, adoption of children), and other avenues of life and the pursuit of happiness. what frightens me is that our democracy is turning into a theocracy, such that a narrow ideology, influenced by "conservative" christians' interpretation of christianity, is becoming (even more so than it ever has been in the past, because i do acknowledge the presence and influence of judeo-christian values in the creation of the Constitution) the foundation upon which social, political, and legal rights and liberties are defined and granted to individuals in this country. |
