Best. Museum. Ever.
I'll tell right upfront, the purpose of this entry is two-fold. Of course, I wanted to share my excitement with you, but this is also propangda to get your ass out here. But since not everyone will make the jaunt, I offered some pics behind the cut.
Like I said, yesterday I spent most of my day at the Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria (high class neighborhood in Queens, close to Manhattan). Pretty self-explanatory, it has exhibits related to film, television, and video games. The best part is that many of the exhibits are interactive, so you can play arcade games old and new, put yourself in front of a "green screen," and see how a baseball game's multiple camera angles are edited. It also has a theater on its main floor which shows classic movies every weekend; it's showing every Billy Wilder movie ever made starting in September. It was a great time and I can't wait to go back, but I'll let the pics speak for themselves...

It's a big joke at Aquinas that the squirrels are evil. It stems from the fact that any squirrel you come upon will not run away, it just stares you down.
Now I didn't believe this because I hadn't seen any squirrels on campus. But on Wednesday, I was walking back through the woods and there was a squirrel by the path just staring at me. He wouldn't move.
So I guess I believe it.

Movies
Congrats to Federico Fellini's La Dolce vita for being the 1300th entry in my giant movie list. Points taken away for being so long and weird. Not saying that I disliked it, but I left asking myself "why?"
Saw aforementioned film at the Museum of the Moving Image, which is now my current favorite attraction in Queens. More about that later (along with a picture or two). I also need to post a couple pics of the place. Made a comprehensive "To Rent" list on IMDB as opposed to having a bunch of random lists lying about; it's up to 87. Too bad I don't have Netflix right now so I can get started. That'll have to wait until I get a burner.
I've really got to get my ass in gear with this writing thing. I start school in 36 hours.

Dormroom slideshow
Hi all, I finally uploaded the pictures I took of my dormroom.
Tara and a couple of her friends came in at around 4 this morning, right when I was in the middle of a deep sleep. They attempted to be quiet, but they didn't succeed at all. They all fell asleep on the floor, and when I woke up they were asleep. And when I came back 3 or so hours later they were still asleep. I hope that they wake up soon because apparently my family, the Germans, and my grandparents are coming by to visit. *hint hint nudge nudge*
Love y'all. And miss y'all terribly a lot.

as always, from RollingStone.com
Thought some of you might enjoy this bulletin:
"DASHBOARD TOSSES EMO TAG
DASHBOARD CONFESSIONAL's CHRIS CARRABBA has teamed with BOB DYLAN and U2 producer DANIEL LANOIS for the follow-up to 2004's "A Mark, A Mission, A Brand, A Scar." Carrabba scrapped an album's worth of material in February in favor of taking a musical risk. "People who were already Dashboard fans probably would have liked those songs," Carrabba told Rolling Stone, "and people who weren't would have had the same complaints as ever." Among the new material is the U2-ish "Heaven Here." The band, which kicks off a U.S. tour tomorrow in East Lansing, Michigan, plans to release the album early next year."
In other news, I think I'm going to spend most of tomorrow checking out the Museum of the Moving Image. Check out the exhibits, get a demonstration of how to do Gumby animation, and catch a double feature of La Dolce Vita and 8 1/2 on the big screen. Jealous yet, Leed-man? ;-)

Hey all, how's life?
I'm here in the tv/pool room where there is wireless network. It sucks that I can't have internet in my room (dad wants me to not be on the computer 24/7), so there's this guy watching tv right now. And it's a Victoria's Secret commercial, and you can just tell that he's enjoying watching these chicks parade around in only their underwears.
Oh good, now the show's back on.
I got my books today. They didn't cost an arm and a leg like I thought they would, but that's also because they ran out of the two English books I need. So I need to go in next week and either make a special order or hope that some more are in.
The walk up to the bookstore wasn't too bad, but the walk back with a bag full of books was treacherous and evil. I actually splurged and used the elevator. Hnnn, tired.
Today, before the book experience, I went with a group downtown Kalamazoo. There's this hippie shop that I want to check out sometime. I could tell that they were burning incense ^____^ I saw a guy with hot pants on. He's also a freshman, that much I could tell. Too bad I had to go with my group...*sighs* But he was definitely raping and stealing pants-worthy ~_^
More people are starting to move into the dorms. I'm happy, more people to meet then ;p

So, evidently I'm 37, not 22
I'm insatiably bored tonight, so I was messing around online and found this...

I mean, it's possible that there's a 37-year-old man who just happened to have lived in the four towns that I took up residence in, but somehow I wouldn't bank on it.

Ignore that first part. It's boring.
I don't really feel like taking a shower tonight. And you know what? I can do that because I am a college student and that's what we do. So tomorrow, I will sport a jaunty chapeau to cover up my greasy hair.
Things are settling down. I just need a JOB and life will be doubleplusgood. As compared to the plusgood it is now. Hardy har har.
If you feel like it, here are pictures from orientation. I'm not in any of those. Well, I'm in the Q.
Aquinas is so beautiful. You guys should just come with me and we'll walk around.
I love you all.
P.S. Nick = the best. Just in case you didn't know.

your humor style: CLEAN | SPONTANEOUS | DARK
Your humor's mostly innocent and off-the-cuff, but somehow there's something slightly menacing about you. Part of your humor is making people a little uncomfortable, even if the things you say aren't themselves confrontational. You probably have a very dry delivery, or are seriously over-the-top.
Your type is the most likely to appreciate a good insult and/or broken bone and/or very very fat person dancing.

I can never be sick from school EVER AGAIN
My mommy got an old-fashioned lawn mower. You know. The kind you push and the blades rotate and it makes you wonder how it cuts grass.
I don't know why but I've always wanted one. She said it was because the other one is too hard to push and get out. She also said that the riding lawn mower was too much of a hassle and missed too many spots.
She's lucky my dad's the lawn and garden buyer. Or maybe that's why she asks, because she knows she can get it.
Either way, it does cut grass. It cuts grass really well. So well, in fact, that I might volunteer to cut the grass.
However, Mom tested it out on the front yard and it did nothing to improve the looks at all. It's just as ugly, if not more so. We have this fungus in the middle of the yard in the shape of the letter c. Weeds and crabgrass cover every other part of the yard. (Except for where it touches the neighbor's yard and his fertilizer was inadvertently spread upon some of our yard. I wouldn't be surprised if it was on purpose, as some kind of hint. "Look at how beautiful your yard can be!" If it was, sorry, guy, our well is broken and we can't water the yard. Nice suggestion though.)
I read the funniest thing yesterday. I was reading 1984 because I love those kinds of books. Someone was talking and it said they spoke "parenthetically" but the sentence they spoke was in parentheses. Most awesome thing ever. Oh, George Orwell, you slay me!
School's going fine, by the way. I'll speak more on the subject when I have time to sit down and let it all sink in.
For now, I'm off to read my Nancy Drew book. Number 32 and only cost me a dollar. I'm a sucker for Nancy Drew. You can blame my aunt Patty for that.
I love you all.
P.S. George Orwell (or shall I call him Eric Arthur Blair?) was fugly. Seriously. That had better just be a very bad picture of him (is that a mustache? If not, what is it?) because I don't know how I can love that man anymore. I'm kidding. He could be a 1000-pound woman and I'd still love him. (Not that way, Nick.)

Oh my god. What a day. Exhausting but excellent.
Things I Love:
1) This city
2) My iPod
3) My life
In that order. Anyway, made it out to Manhattan for the first time since getting down there. I can't explain it, but just walking out of the subway, the moment you get above ground and are thrown into the thick of things, there's a moment every time that makes me feel so alive. I went up there to get my student ID from the Graduate Center, so after doing that first thing (nice building, by the way), I decided to do some sightseeing. Visited the New York Public Library (beautiful architecture) and a couple of nearby parks. On my way to Manhattan, I read a blurb (which is like a mini-article, Michelle) about an art exhibit by Mark Mothersbaugh. Mark (we're not on a first-name basis, mind you, I just don't want to write out that last name again) was the lead singer of Devo (funky New Wave with weird red funnel hats that sung "Whip It") and he has also scored all of Wes Anderson films (Royal Tenenbaums, Life Aquatic). Despite being an accomplished artist, the catch is that he is severely near-sighted; he was even "declared" legally blind as a child. That said, I thought to myself, "How cool that I can just check this out on a whim?" So I went. The entrance to this gallery was a single door in between a cafe and a convience store, so needless to say it took a while to find. Talk about a hole in the wall. The entrance leads to this bar area (which had a very charming condemned quality to it) where there was absolutely no one. One scruffy looking guy finally came out of (literally) nowhere and said hello. I told him I was there for the exhibit and he directed me to the back of the establishment. The whole thing was kind of broke-ass, but a couple of the paintings were pretty interesting (I took a couple pics on my phone, once I figure out how to transfer them, I'll try and post 'em). But the thing I really love about this city is even when something goes wrong (I got slightly lost between the subway and the exhibit), there's a good likelihood you'll run into something awesome that equals it all out; I discovered a very cool record shop (called Other Music) directly across from a Tower Records that ate up 45 wonderful minutes of my life. Alas, I am a cheap ass and didn't buy anything, mostly due to the fact that I knew I was going to pick up the Special Edition of Interpol's Antics on the way home (which is seemingly scrumpous I must add).
Sorry, that was way longer than I thought it would be, but I thought it was an amusing anecdote, and one representative of my experience over here so far.
By the way, while my futon mattress is intimidatingly huge (I'm hoping that it'll flatten out a bit after some use), it is delicious.
Oh yeah, I found a faster way home from the Queens mall/Target/Best Buy complex. Saves at least 10 minutes for the walk. I rock.
