GCSE Fieldwork guidelines
Nature of the task.
The task should be stated as an issue or question. Candidates will find it easier to answer as a question.
It will be based on a local issue related to at least one area of the syllabus e.g. Brownfield site redevelopment and traffic problems
Greenfield site development and environmental impact
Changes in employment relating to a new development or government scheme e.g. Thames Gateway and Southend development
Variety of data.
There should be obvious opportunities to use primary and secondary data.
primary - survey e.g. traffic
questionnaire e.g. local residents
mapping e.g. landuse, road layout
photos e.g. local area/area for development/road layout
secondary - maps e.g. O.S. , streetplan
aerial photographs of landuse, road layout
photos
surveys - council traffic survey
Note opportunity for use of ICT and be certain that this is highlighted to
students.
Presentation.
Identify in advance the possible techniques beyond the basic. e.g. flow lines, isolines, overlays.
Note opportunity for use of ICT and be certain that this is highlighted to
students.
Analysis.
Make a clear connection between the initial question and the analysis. By identifying the purpose of the data collection task the student should readily see the relevance of the task to the analysis.
Questionnaires should allow techniques such as the weighting of responses and thus a link between the various tasks.
Allow opportunity for values analysis and attitudes to be clearly identified.
Conclusion.
The student should be able to refer back to the initial question and answer it!!
There should also be the opportunity to identify the validity of the tasks and the data obtained so that the whole task can be evaluated.
The task needs to follow a logical sequence so that the candidates can organise their work independently.
