hey kids!!!! well, today was .... um... AWESOME! that's the only word that comes to mind when i think of today. it was sooo much fun. we got up and i showered..OUTDOORS :), had some breakfast and whatever. then we did a tour of alcatraz island which back in the 1930's-60's was the worst federal penitentrary in the country and was described as inexcapable. some of the most famous prisoners were there. so that was really cool to tour the inside and see how these criminals lived. we got to ride on a boat and all that fun stuff. we saw some seals suning themsleves this morning. then after the tour we just walked around fishermans wharf, which is like a big huge tourist place. just shop after shop after shop after resturaunt and street vendors with everything you can think of. people doing paintings and playing guitar on the street. we had the BEST shrimp off the street and clam chowder...mmmmm!!!! then we took a cable car into the city and saw lumbard street, the crookedest street in the world...haha..try getting your car down there. right....:) we went into a museum with all these little machines you can put quarters into. we listened to player pianos play old rag time music and dancing puppets and fourtune tellers...way cool :) then..okay, get ready for this... we went past union square with macy's and sax fifth avenue and tiffinays!! only to end up at the san fransisco shopping centere... a freaking 7 story mall with NORDSTROMS!!! i saw stuff in there from seventeen magazine and i'm not joking. $200 for a shirt. holy shit! there was a full grand steinway and sons piano there with a lady playing. she was sooooooooooooooooo good. i really miss my piano. *sigh* and my flute. i need my instruments. oh well.... so, then we got some CHUNKY MONKEY ice cream at ben and jerrys and headed home. overall, today rocked :). i really like i here. the weather was about 70 degrees so i was just in a tank top and got a little pink on my face :). expect a daily update. mainly its for me because then i can remember what i did everyday without having to write it down in a notebook or anything. sooo...hope everyone is having a great time in whatever you're doing to keep busy!!! love and hugs to all :) !!!!! ps... i'm 3 hours behind your time...that's why the entries are at funny times a day :)

Baseball, More Than a Game Every spring, from New York to San Francisco, from Seattle to Miami, a new season begins. The ball clubs are coming north, and America’s Pastime will return the boys of summer to cities across the nation. Baseball, America’s sport, is entertainment, but it is also so much more. Baseball is America, and the two are forever linked. The demonstration of the feeling between baseball and it’s fans can be told by the storied voice of Hall of Fame announcer, Ernie Harwell (click sound on left). From grassroots foundations behind the lines of the Union Army, to a rallying point of America during World War II, to the evils of segregation, and more recently a sign of American prosperity, baseball has reflected American society.
Baseball is an American game. Modern day baseball’s invention is attributed to Abner Doubleday. Although versions of the game had been played in various locations around the world, Doubleday is accredited as being the first person to write down the rules of the game. In addition to being dubbed the creator of baseball, Doubleday also served as a lieutenant in the Union Army, before and during the Civil War. Doubleday was part of the garrison that manned Fort Sumter, the place where hostilities first began. After his reassignment from Sumter, baseball quickly became a past time of many Union soldiers. The game was simple to set up and could be played almost anywhere when a significant amount of players could be found. Baseball was popularized by its play during the Civil War. In a way, baseball spread throughout the nation as a result of a horrific war that led to deep division within the nation. Later, that spread and division would be a unifying force in American society.
During World War II, America’s men left the country to fight the enemies of the country. In many communities women went into the workplace to replace those men. Many companies promoted women in the workplace by popularizing the figure of “Rosie the Riveter.” Rosie, a name given to all women who choose to enter the workforce during the war, was something of a national hero, helping to power the American war machine while at the same time tending to a household. This played a key role in the nation’s pastime, baseball. Baseball was also plagued by a shortage of “workers” at the time. Many Major League players enlisted in the armed services. Ted Williams, the star left fielder of the Boston Red Sox is a prime example. Williams spent one tour of duty during World War II flying in the Pacific theater fighting the imperial forces of Japan. With a shortage of quality male talent, profit minded club owners started a woman’s baseball league. Very large profits were to be found in the entertainment industry. The nation was geared for wartime production. Wages were high, however the consumer goods that were available in the 1920's were not being produced. In addition, rationing of other goods led to a surplus of consumer dollars. With this money, people were led to quality entertainment, leading the owners to start such a league of women. These women faced many of the same challenges of balancing household work and a job. The situation that these women found themselves in is portrayed in the movie, “A League of Their Own.” The trend toward entertainment, and the flight of men to the war, caused baseball to reflect the economic and patriotic realities of society.
Although Jackie Robinson broke into baseball in 1947, baseball was still a highly segregated institution. Baseball resembled most other societal functions, African Americans in one place, whites in another. Some of the Negro Leagues best players never saw a Major League pitch. Great players such as Josh Gibson, who is said to be the true home run king, spent their entire lives playing professional ball, but never made it to the Major Leagues. Satchel Paige had to pitch well past normal retirement age to spend years in the big leagues. Paige spent six years in Major League Baseball, he retired at the age of forty-eight. Although it took mainstream American society almost until the 1970's to fully integrate, baseball broke with tradition and had achieved almost total integration by 1950. The legacy of Robinson, Paige, and Gibson, mark a point in time where baseball broke from it’s long held reflection of society in terms of segregation.
Recently, baseball has become a reflection of the economic wealth. The 1990's saw tremendous economic growth. The Dow Jones’ Industrial Average skyrocketed to unprecedented heights. In 1990 the Dow Jones Industrials Average was at 2633.66 as compared to 1999 when the average closed out at 11,497.10. In the 90's baseball also prospered, becoming a multibillion dollar industry and generating tremendous economic opportunity for almost all involved. The leading figure in this was the average salary of a Major League Baseball Player. The average salary went from $578,930 in 1990 to $1,720,050 in 1999. More recently, the American economy has gone into recession. The results of a slow down in capital investment combined with the September 11th attacks have caused a downturn in the American economy. This downturn can also be seen in the economics of baseball. The free agent market in the winter of 2002-03 saw many players taking significant pay cuts. Kenny Rogers, a successful left handed pitcher for the Texas Rangers was offered five million dollars a year to resign with the Rangers. Rogers, holding out for more money declined the offer. Just before the start of the season, having not received any other offers, Rogers signed for two million dollars with the Minnesota Twins. In other instances, some players continue to benefit from contracts that were signed during peak times, when talent was expensive. Most player signed to such contracts continue to produce, such as the Rangers’ Alex Rodriguez, who is making twenty-five million dollars a year, however, other players do not. The most recent examples are Greg Vaughn of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays and Damion Easley of the Detroit Tigers. Both player were owed multi-million dollars over the next year. However, these teams choose to release them from their contracts. This is similar of the downsizing of American business. Many businesses release their higher paid employees to create payroll flexibility. This leads to increased unemployment rates. Currently the American economy is saddled with such burdens.
Baseball at its very best is a pure American game. A game that, by some, is considered comparable to a religion. In a way, peoples lives flow up and down with the game, just as the game flows up and down as a reflection of American society.

Have you ever encountered a moment where societies repression was so clearly apparent, yet it seemed equally clear that it was necessary?
No, I have not.

Just speaking in broad terms, I get to be a liberal conservative. Two contradicting terms, but who cares. Sometimes we are so busy just living our lives that we forget about all of those things. This summer seems like it could be fun. Living alone, with a job, but still having time for myself. Getting to explore parts of myself away from the crap of everyday life. There is so much in my brain that I can't find anymore. Soemtimes the past seems like a distant dream, that when it was over, was barely remembered. It also seems like that past was so unlikely, that it may have never happened, yet an equally unlikely future could be born from it. I don't want to live my life with regrets that I didn't explore as much as I could, be it anything. Spending time alone may be a challenge for me because sometimes people bring out the best. I mean no one at school does right now because I don't talk to anyone there. Except for Jenny, I talk to her every once in awhile. She probe my mind almost like I'm a mystery to her, and I like being a mystery. But we've had like two serious conversations. That's it, two serious conversations with one person in what, 15 weeks? That really sukcs. I'm surrounded by some of the brighter minds of the state and I have two serious conversations about something. College isn't all it's cracked up to be. It makes you think hard about where you want to fall in society, it teached you things, but mostly it's crap. It's a snobish system where people who have been through the same crap force you to do it too because that is what was done to them, only at much larger and prestigious schools. They have no intention of helping you retain and apply the information, only that you learn it for them, it's like jumpinng through hoops. It fosteres no real discussions or relationships among students outside the classroom. Of course, this is little ol GVSU I'm talking about. There so damned conservative. The people there seem to be really stuck up with barely anyone putting out good ideas. Even the prgressives seem to be conservative. But hey, I can't change the system. In Cedar I thought I could help, I could use my voice to help. But in the big world, you can only help in small ways. Maybe the best way is to help small things in big ways and hope for the best.

okay, first off, i just want to congradulate the guys on winning the talent show without anyone having a band bashing war with the comments. i respect all the bands for the courage to get up in front of almost 1,000 people and play music. it takes alot of guts and i think everyone did a great job. i think everyone thinks that i totally hate BSC because i'm such a fuzzy logic fan but i don't. i think BSC has a lot of potential and a lot of talent within their band. but i will always be back stage cheering on josh, jake, roman and "the bass player", whoever it may be :).

okay, so... now that's over and done with i will continue.

monday we leave for san fransisco. i did the majority of my packing tonight so i should be okay. i'm reallllllly excited!! the weather should be nicer than all the ice and snow here! danielle called me from florida today! i was so happy to hear from her. she said it was about 80 degrees there and she was sitting by the pool in her bathing suit! ahhh....it sounded sooo nice. but soon enought, i too will be doing the same i hope. it just won't be 80 degrees. 70 if i'm lucky.

the puppies are doing good. mom gave them a bath today and they are all nice and clean to go over to jill's house for break. they are so cute sometimes. they'll just fall asleep in my arms and it's the best feeling. :)

anyways, i'm still a little sick and my voice is still a little froggy but that's okay. hope everyone has a good break and i'll be thinking about you all in CA. lots of love and hugs!!

Scheduling
Well I was really tired yesterday and depressed because I had so much to do, so then I decided to schedule my classes for next year. Usually that is so stressful, but I had all my stuff set up and it was a breeze. I more or less maintained my MWF schedule, got all the classes I wanted and I don't have to go this summer.
Fall semester is: BIO 103, ED 205, HST 204, HST 300, PSY 301
Winter semester is: ED 225, HST 203, PLS 327, PLS 340, and SOC 201
Looks good. No GenEd the second semester though. All my major and Ed requirements are done except HST 210 which was full, and PSY 325. I'll be in real good shape with my minor after next year and I doubt if I will have to take but two more Poli Sci classes. Rock On.

8th Grade Lesson Plan on The United States Constitution
Anticipatory Set: Students have been taught about the Constitution previously. This is an in depth look at our system of government and will clarify some myths.
Objectives: Students will: - possess an understanding of how our government works at the national level
- be able to name the major compromises that made ratification possible
- be able to identify the three branches of government
Instructinal Input: I will lecture while I write important facts on the board/overhead for the students to take notes.
Modeling: Explanation of various compromises and terms.
Check for Understanding: Ask questions of random students to determine if the knowledge has been retained.
Guided Practice: Students will be aked to get into groups of four. They will then formulate a paragraph, each composing a sentence of that paragraph. The topic of the paragraph will be one of the three branches of government.
Independent Practice: I will ask students to choose two or three terms (the third being extra credit). They will then formulate their own definitions of those terms based upon their own understanding. For homework.
Evaluation: A matching quiz will be handed out the next day. It will cover major terms, the three branches, and major compromises. The students will be given 10-15 minutes to complete the activity.
Materials: -students

hmmm... it's been a while since my last post. sorry about that, but i've been extremely busy bee.

mentoring is going good, but it's getting a little old. the same old ritual every day, same snacks, same kids, same teachers....it's kind of boring. but, hey, it's money. and i shouldn't be complaining.

the musical is finally over!! hurrah! it was alot of fun, but i'm really glad it's done. last week was just really jam packed and it just added to the stress pot. the cast party was just a riot last night. we had a blast doing all those silly dances. jess came home with me after and spent the night. so we had a full house with grandpa and grandma here.

state solo and ensemble was yesterday. both my quartet and solo got a one so i was very happy about that. i think almost everyone was very pleased with our ratings. we worked hard. personally, i had a blast and can't wait till next year!

sooo... now it's time to start thinking about spring break, which i'm very ready for by the way. i'm looking forward to seeing my aunt and spending sometime with her and my mom out in california.

the 30 hour famine was last weekend. so far we have raised $2,500 for world vision. they will be using the money to provide food, shelter, health care and clothing to people of poverty all over the world, but mostly in africa. it was one of the most life changing experences i've ever had. 30 hours going without food seems like a long time, but it wasn't at all. especially when you think of the people who go so much longer without food. my stomach didn't even growl! the great band, clemency from oklahoma city was there and played at the great concert friday night with 3 other bands. they played some more on saturday and because they were staying with ashley badge and her family, they came to church and sunday school on sunday morning and played there too. they were awesome and extremley nice and just a joy to meet. we're hoping they can come and visit somtime this summer. so overall, it was an amazing experence. i have a booklet of everyones testamonies. if anyone is intrested in reading what was going through our minds, talk to me and i'll bring it in for you to read.

well, with that, i think that's all that's been going on latley. everyone wish ANDY a happy 15th birthday on saturday, march 29th. i know it's early, andy, but i don't know if i'll write before then, so i'm getting it in now :). and happy 16th birthday to RYAN on wednesday, march 26th.

hope everyone has a good week and feel free to update me on what's been going on with you too! i love email and comments! good night and sweet dreams to all :)

It's gettin' hot out therre
The warmer it gets, the less people wear, the more skin they show.

Have you ever had a time in your life like there was so much potential? Like life is more than you but is completely about you. It's a strange feeling to put into words. I realize that I am living history. Funny thing history is, maybe that is why I love it. The study of the present in the future, ever think about it that way? We're going to war. As in everything the oppostition has a more intelligent arguement, or at least it seems like it. For me I am skeptical of the way a war is portrayed. I still support it, but I can come up with some very damaging questons about needing to go to war. I mean it feels like we've eliminated everyone else who is opposed to us. Now were going after a smaller insignificant opposition. I can't come up with a comparable analogy, but it's like winning all the heavy weight championships and then fighting in feather weight matches. It's almost a feeling that I have to support the war, and to a certain extent I do. I think it is a necessary evil, however it could do a lot of harm in the process.

As far as social change goes, I feel like there is a new era on the horizon. We're stuck in this materialistic society that consumes everything and tries it's hardest to consume even basic human love such as love and happiness. We have replaced love with spending power. Although this isn't our doing (our parents generation), we allow it to continue. I was reading about how college student got fed up with being trained to be corporate clerks and that is what sparked the Freedom Summer of '68 and the Summer of Love in '69, where is that in our generation. People drink and party because, hell, what else is there to do. A lot more, it's just we don't believe that we can do anything about it. Sometimes I wonder if my fantasies aren't something everybody goes through. my dreams of writing, of having a real impact on society. it thought those dreams were unrealistic because I saw so many adults in places where there talents that would be great for those areas were instead in another profession. Perhaps they never had the dream. I do have my dreams like that. Jessa reminded me lately with her posts. It's the freshness of the ideas, the optimism. Not many people here have that. Not many people have that passion. Far too many people who have the Christian faith do not have the passion. They don't like to say things are wrong but they are. I want to have passion. Passion for life, passion for a cause, passion for my cause. I know there are people out there who agree with me, but not many make and idealistic transition from childhood to post-adolescense, and eve less into adulthood. So if your out there, no matter if I agree with you or not, if you hold that passion, I believe that our generation will be alright.
